Founders Hank & Rose Sanders
Hank and Rose were best friends at Harvard lag School in the turbulent 60’s. They dreamed together, worked tillsammans and struggled together against racism and other injustices.
In , they were both arrested in Aretha Franklin’s father church in stad, Michigan. They, along with everyone in the church, were terrorized, arrested and charged with attempted murder. They were released the next day and cleared of all charges thanks to Judge George Crockett, Jr., a courageous African American judge. The event strengthened their bond and their commitment to fight injustice.
Three years later Hank and Rose returned to Alabama after spending a year in Africa. Somewhat disillusioned by the impact of the organization of African people, they returned to the South where they worked as legal services attorneys in

Hank Sanders seeks to return to State Senate
Longtime State Senator Henry “Hank” Sanders (D-Selma) qualified with the Alabama Democratic Party for the State Senate on Tuesday.

In , Sanders qualified for another term for the Senate only to drop out of the race on the last day of kvalificerande. His daughter Malika Sanders-Fortier ran in his place. She was elected and has represented the people of SD23 for the last four years. During that time, she has fought a battle with cancer. She has not qualified for re-election.
Sanders in a statement said that his daughter is not running again.
“When I served in the State Senate, expansion of Medicaid was a critical focus for me,” Sanders said. “While Senator Fortier was in the Senate, Medicaid expansion was a great focus for her. That is unfinished business. So are other critical issues. Therefore, I have decided to run

Senator Henry “Hank” Sanders is the second of 13 children born to Ola Mae and Sam Sanders of Baldwin County, Alabama. He challenged the twin obstacles of poverty and racism to: graduate from Douglasville High School, Talladega College, and Harvard Law School; establish a law practice; and serve as the first African American State Senator from the Alabama Black Belt. He is married to Faya Ora Rose Toure, formerly Rose M. Sanders, and they have three children by birth, four by foster relationship, and many by heart.
In , Sanders began what became Chestnut, Sanders, Sanders, Pettaway and Campbell, LLC. At one time, it was the largest Black law firm in Alabama and one of the ten largest in the country. His law practice is one of service: helping poor and Black people save their lands, protecting people’s constitutional rights, challenging corporate abuse, and helping build strong governments to serve all people.
