    Sir Edmund Percival Hillary (20 July – 11 January ) was a New Zealand mountaineer, explorer, and philanthropist. On 29 May , Hillary and Sherpa mountaineer Tenzing Norgay became the first climbers confirmed to have reached the summit of Mount Everest. They were part of the ninth British expedition to Everest, led by John Hunt. From to he served as New Zealand's High Commissioner to India and Bangladesh and concurrently as Ambassador to Nepal.

    Hillary became interested in mountaineering while in secondary school. He made his first major climb in , reaching the summit of Mount Ollivier.[2] He served in the Royal New Zealand Air Force as a navigator during World War II and was wounded in an accident.     Sir Edmund Percival Hillary , (born 20 July , died 11 January ) was a New Zealand mountaineer and explorer. He and Sherpa guide Tenzing Norgay were the first people to climb Mount Everest. They got to the top on 29 May Mount Everest is the tallest mountain on Earth. During his teenage years, Hillary had attended Auckland Grammar School.
