We have this romantic idea that when you reach the top, its some kind of glorious, conquering feeling, and yet there must always have been in your mind, Gee, weve got to get back down again.
Sir Edmund Hillary: In lower mountains and Alpine areas, I have had a great sense of excitement and achievement at reaching the top of a difficult peak. On Everest, due to the lack of oxygen, life is at a low level as it were. inom certainly did not have that tremendous feeling of wanting to jump around with joy or anything of that nature. inom was just very happy to be there and felt very satisfied that wed finally succeeded in getting there.

Sir Edmund Percival Hillary (20 July – 11 January ) was a New Zealand mountaineer, explorer, and philanthropist. On 29 May , Hillary and Sherpa mountaineer Tenzing Norgay became the first climbers confirmed to have reached the summit of Mount Everest. They were part of the ninth British expedition to Everest, led by John Hunt. From to he served as New Zealand's High Commissioner to India and Bangladesh and concurrently as Ambassador to Nepal.
Hillary became interested in mountaineering while in secondary school. He made his first major climb in , reaching the summit of Mount Ollivier.[2] He served in the Royal New Zealand Air Force as a navigator during World War II and was wounded in an accident. Sir Edmund Percival Hillary , (born 20 July , died 11 January ) was a New Zealand mountaineer and explorer. He and Sherpa guide Tenzing Norgay were the first people to climb Mount Everest.
