    Comedic actress Kaye Ballard used her distinctive looks and voice to carve out a successful career on stage and television. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, she began performing in revues in the s, appearing frequently with tagg Jones. She moved into television with an appearance on "Henry Morgan's Great Talent Hunt" (NBC, ). While she was appearing in the off-Broadway play "The Golden Apple," she sang on the original recording of the now-standard "Fly Me to the Moon." She joined Julie Andrews and Alice Ghostley in the TV production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Cinderella" (CBS, ), which helped launch Andrews to stardom. She added feature films to her growing resume with a role opposite Jane Powell in the comedy "The Girl Most Likely" ().     Kaye Ballard had a contented smile on her face as she watched herself, larger than life, at the Palm Springs International Film Festival screening of her documentary, “Kaye Ballard: The Show Goes On,” this month at the Palm Springs Cultural Center.

    She had been greeted in the lobby by mobs of fans, taking pictures and congregating around her wheelchair like close personal friends. It made her caregiver nervous, and she advised Ballard to leave the theater early more than once. Her heart was weak. She needed to be in bed.

    But Ballard waved her off as the audience broke into spontaneous applause seven times during the film. Ballard stayed for about an hour, until just before a scene depicting her conflict with her mother. Then her caregiver wheeled her out of the theater one last time. When she was gone, a reporter sitting across the aisle sensed she was really gone.

    Ballard was born Catherine Gloria Balotta in Cleveland, Ohio, one of four children born to Italian immigrant parents, Lena (née Nacarato) and Vincenzo (later Vincent James) Balotta. Her parents immigrated to the United States from Calabria, a region of southern Italy.[2]
