    DĀWŪD KHAN, MOḤAMMAD (b. Kabul, / , d. Kabul, 7 Ṯawr Š./27 April ), prime minister ( Š./) and first president of Afghanistan ( Š./; Figure 1). His father, Moḥammad ʿAzīz Khān, was a brother of Moḥammad Nāder Shah ( Š./). The family belonged to the Yaḥyāḵēl lineage of the royal Moḥammadzay clan of the Bārakzay tribe of the Dorrānī Pashtuns.

    Dāwūd lived and studied in Europe from Š./ to Š./ while his father and for part of that time his uncle remained in exile during the reign of Amān-Allāh Khan, representing a rival branch of the clan.     Prince Mohammed Daoud was born in Kabul in , a member of the ruling family of the Kingdom of Afghanistan. He was the nephew of King Mohammed Nadir Shah and cousin of Mohammed Zahir Shah.
