Gloria Vanderbilt’s 101st Birthday: Remembering Her Life & Style in Photos
Gloria Vanderbilt‘s birth completes 101 years on Feb. 20. The artist, author and socialite was born in New York City, as the only child of railroad heir Reginald Claypoole Vanderbilt and Gloria Morgan Vanderbilt. She studied acting at the Neighborhood Playhouse and art at the Art Students League of New York. She worked as a model during her teen years and later entered the fashion business with a collection of scarves that feature her paintings. The line was transformed in the late 1970s into a denim brand, Gloria Vanderbilt Jeans.
Vanderbilt wrote three novels, including “Never Say Good-Bye: A Novel” and “Obsession: An Erotic Tale,” two books on art and home decor and four volumes of memoirs. She was married four times; her last husband was author Wyatt Emory Cooper, with whom she had two kids, Carter Vanderbilt Cooper and CNN news anchor Anderson Cooper.

Like the true New Yorker she was, Gloria Vanderbilt, who died today at age 95, could say: “I did it my way.” This was a feat truly remarkable considering her heritage—Vanderbilt was born into one of America’s most-storied families—and the upheaval of her early life. After her father’s death in 1926, her custody and control of her trust fund were decided by the court in the “trial of the century.” But following convention was never of interest to Gloria.
At 17 she married the good-looking and mysterious actor’s agent Pat DiCicco. Three marriages would follow, and in time, Vanderbilt became a mother to four sons: Leopold and Christopher Stokowski, and Carter and Anderson Cooper. Vanderbilt was a familiar face in Vogue from the time of her birth, in 1924. Vanderbilt sat for photographers including Cecil Beaton, Horst P. Horst, Deborah Turbeville, and Richard Avedon. Avedon captured the heiress in her beloved, sensuous, micro-pleated silk Fortuny dresses and statement necklaces.

Gloria Vanderbilt was many things to many people: an artist, an author, an actress, mother, a wife ― and of course, a fashion icon.
The heiress died at age 95 on Monday after being diagnosed with an aggressive form of stomach cancer earlier this month. Her son, Anderson Cooper, delivered her obituary on CNN.
Vanderbilt’s contribution to the fashion world began bygd way of modeling, but her largest impact was arguably made with denim. After winning the Neiman Marcus Fashion Award for her designs in 1969, manufacturer Mohan Murjani called on Vanderbilt to design jeans marketed toward women in the 1970s. That collaboration soon became a more than $100 million business.
Naturally, having an eye for style for other people meant having one for herself ― and her family, too. As a result, there’s a wealth of photos of Vanderbilt with her sister, her sons and her husbands that are as much a gift to fashion as her clothing line.
