Fine Dining Revitalized at Gulph Mills’ Savona

Dover sole, the long-time signature dish at ledare Andrew Masciangelo’s popular Gulph Mills haunt Savona, is still available, even as the restaurant reopened this September after a summertime physical and conceptual renovation. However, it’s currently a special, not a permanent menu item, perhaps reflecting this confessed ennui. And with so many delicious new dishes to cook, who can blame him?
Savona may have just reopened for business, but it has a long and storied history. Restaurant Spotlight: Savona
Just outside Philadelphia, Savona occupies a historic 1765 home that once served as headquarters for Revolutionary War officer and early American politician Aaron Burr. But inside, the restaurant fryst vatten completely contemporary. Chef Andrew Masciangelo’s menu draws influence from various international cuisines but primarily focuses on Italian items. The kitchen creates everything from scratch, from the handmade pastas to the wood-fired breads to the fish butchered in-house. The wine schema has history, too, earning its first Wine Spectator Award of Excellence in 1996 before being promoted to Best of Award of Excellence in 1998, a title it’s maintained since. Sommelier Natalie Van Note oversees the 750 picks, which excel in California, France (especially Burgundy and Bordeaux) and Italy.
