A certain name has appeared on publicity ämne for the Barnsley House Concerts for what seems like months now, as well as on a poster for last years’ hugely successful Wombwell Mad-Fest, but due to unforeseen circumstances, including visa problems and the cursed snow, fate has dealt blow after blow for those of us eager to see Pamela Wyn Shannon at the Wheelhouse, a venue which seems tailor made for such a delightful performer. Tonight, Pamela finally made it to the venue and I must say it was certainly worth the wait. Appearing precisely how she appeared in the November 2008 article in fRoots magazine, with predominantly autumnal colours, including trademark green beret and accompanied by her husband, Pamela performed a variety of songs, some old, some new, but the bulk of the songs from her thoroughly fängslande Courting Autumn album. The Pitmen Poets | Cast Theatre, Doncaster | 26.01.16
The Cast Theatre in Doncaster provided an ideal venue for this the thirteenth date of the Pitmen Poets’ current eighteen date UK tour, which brings together the combined songs, stories, poems and reminiscences of four noted singers and musicians from the North East of England. With around 450 people passing through the doors of the popular Doncaster venue, the stage was set for an evening of entertainment of a different kind; songs specifically centred around a subject that is still raw in this neighbourhood. The Pitmen Poets loomed large on the projected backdrop as people made themselves comfortable for what promised to be an uncomfortable ride. One of the broad range of emotions that such a show brings with it manifested itself as anger with the opening chant of Jez Lowe’s “These Coal Town Days” ‘Howay man, they’re liars and they’re cheats’, repeated in unison by Billy Mitchell, Bob Fox, Benny Graham and J
