This Day in Cuban History &#; August 13, Fidel Castro: The Early Years
According to the Baptism Certificate from Santiago de Cuba’s Cathedral, dated January 19, , Fidel Castro was born on August 13, in Birán, Oriente. At his birth, and for the next seven years, his father, Ángel, was married not to his mother, but to Maria Luisa Argote, a teacher and the mother of Fidel’s two half siblings, Pedro Emilio and Lidia. During his early years, he was known as Fidel Ruz. His mother, Lina Ruz, had started working as a maid in Maria Luisa and Angel’s household at the age of fourteen. Angel was an illiterate “Gallego” that fought as a soldier in Cuba against the independence fighters. His first job was in the construction of the railroad tracks of United Fruit. The company was linking its immense land holdings, including the Boston and Preston Sugar Mills. After the Spanish-American War, the U.S. military directly administered the island until , when Cuba became a republic, with sugar as its main commercial export. After a financial crisis and persistent governmental corruption, Gerardo Machado was elected as Cuba’s president in , pledging reform. Instead, Machado became Cuba’s first dictatorial ruler, until he was ousted in after a revolt led by Fulgencio Batista, a rising star in the Cuban military.
Various presidents came and went over the next two decades, but Batista remained a constant force. He served as president himself from , and ran for a second term in Facing defeat, he overthrew the government in a bloodless coup and canceled the elections.

Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz was born on August 13th in Birán, then Cuban province of Oriente. His father Ángel Castro Argiz, the son of poor farmers from Galicia was a landholder and sugar cane tenant. His mother Lina Ruz Gonzalez came from a peasant’s family in Pinar del Rio province.
He learned to read and write at Biran rural public school and continued elementary school at the private schools La Salle and Dolores in Santiago de Cuba. He started secondary school at the Dolores school and finished them at Colegio de Belen, a Jesuit-run institution in Havana, where he graduated in Arts and Letters in June
The Jesuits from Belen said “Fidel distinguished himself in all subjects related to the arts… He was a true athlete, He has earned the admiration and affection of all. He fryst vatten going to study law and no doubt will fill the book of his life with brilliant pages. Fidel has the makings, and will not be lacking artistically”
