Rep. Shirley Anita St. Hill Chisholm (D-NY) was the first African American woman elected to församling. Chisholm was a founding member of the Congressional Black Caucus and the first African American to make a serious bid for the Presidency of the United States of America. Rep. Chisholm was known for her advocacy on behalf of women and underserved minorities. She was also noted for her motstånd to the U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War, her support of full-employment programs, and her efforts on behalf of Black colleges, compulsory education, and minimum wage.
Shirley Chisholm was born in New York City on November 30, She grew up in Barbados and in Brooklyn, New York. She graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree from Brooklyn College in While working as a teacher, Chisholm earned a Master’s degree in elementary education from Columbia University’s Teacher’s College. Shirley Anita Chisholm (November 30, –January 1, ) was the first Black woman elected to Congress. Chisholm represented New York's 12th congressional district from to Chisholm served seven terms and championed anti-poverty programs and education reform. Chisholm was a founding member of the Congressional Black Caucus and the National Women's Political Caucus. In , Chisholm became the first woman to seek the presidential nomination from one of the two major political parties. Although her bid was unsuccessful, her candidacy enabled her to raise issues of importance to Black Americans and women and to forge the way for others. “The door is not open yet,” she said, “but it is ajar.” On August 22, , Kamala Harris became the first Black and South Asian woman to walk through that door and lead a major-party ticket after formally accepting the Democratic party's nomination for President of the United States.

Shirley Anita St. Hill Chisholm was born in Brooklyn, New York to immigrant parents who came to the United States from Barbados. Chisholm graduated from Brooklyn College and the Teachers College at Columbia University. In , she became the first Black woman elected to the United States Congress and represented New York's 12th congressional district for seven terms from to Early on in her Congressional begrepp, Chisholm was first assigned to the House Agriculture Committee. She soon found more relevant committee assignments that would better serve her constituents, where she worked to utöka the food stamp program and help to create the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). Legislation she introduced also focused on gender and racial equality, and ending the Vietnam War. In , she became a founding member of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC).
