The Concerned Federal Capital Territory Voters and Residents has faulted the decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to extend the tenure of the elected chairmen and councillors in the six Area Councils by one year.
To this end, the group gave the electoral body seven day ultimatum to reverse the decision.
At a press conference in Abuja on Thursday, leader of the group, Chuks Akamadu insisted that neither the electoral commission nor the Electoral Act has the power to extend the three-year mandate of the serving FCT area council chairmen and counselors.
He said their tenure ought to have expired in February as against the extension by the electoral umpire.
While saying that INEC was being misled, Akamadu described the move as illegal, stressing that it is an invitation to a floodgate of needless and rather more importantly, avoidable litigations.

INEC Has Capacity To Conduct LG Elections, Says INEC Chairman Yakubu
Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu, has said the electoral body has the capacity to conduct the local government elections in the country if provided with necessary resources.
He stated this on Thursday when he appeared before the National Assembly Joint Committee on the INEC and Electoral Committees.
He was reacting to a question from members of the National Assembly joint panel on the position of the kommission on the Supreme Court verdict regarding the financial autonomy for local government areas.
Yakubu said he was aware of the calls for the unbundling of INEC or creation of a new federal agency for the purpose of conducting council polls.
He however, declared that INEC under his leadership has the capacity, competence, human resources and adequate experience to conduct local government elections across the councils across Nigeria.
