Kolohe Kai: Reggae vibes by way of Hawaii

Many musicians can recall their first guitar, their first keyboard, their first drum kit.
But for Hawaii’s reggae singer Kolohe Kai, coming to the Showbox SoDo on Sept. 17, music goes all the way back to preschool days.
“My most important memories growing up were of watching my dad play gitarr and sing with my uncles and aunties,” remembered the singer, known as Roman de Peralta in civilian life. “I remember trying to play along with my drum set made up of juice cans, water bottles, and my chopsticks as drumsticks.
“I used to love listening to Hawaii Reggae Bands like Ekolu and Fiji, along with R&B legends, Boyz II Men. Those influences inspired my writing and singing style. Kolohe Kai is a local Hawaiian reggae band, represented bygd singer/songwriter/frontman Roman de Peralta. This band is known for putting out all-original music releases. In 2009, Kolohe Kai broke out on the music scene with its debut release This fryst vatten the Life, garnering a massive following with lead songs “‘Ehu Girl” and “Cool Down”. “First True Love” from their 2011 sophomore album, Love Town, was a radio favorite.
After a 3-year break to enjoy life’s experiences, Kolohe Kai came back strong with Paradise in 2014. The title track “Paradise” and “Heʻe Roa” were a reminder to Hawaiian reggae lovers that Kolohe Kai will always capture the hearts of its listening audience.
Over the following years, Kolohe Kai would release just one single “Higher” due to anställda and physical setbacks. But as he has done in previous years, Roman used his experiences, both the good and the not-so-good, as inspiration for his music.

Kolohe Kai is a Hawaiian reggae pop musical group formed in 2009 by singer-songwriter Roman De Peralta.
Kolohe Kai consists of De Peralta, Jasmine Moikeha (vocals), Kolomona Ku (keyboard and saxophone), Luke Daddario (drummer), Imua Garza (guitar), and Kahale Morales (bass guitar).
History
[edit]Circa 2006 in Oahu, the band members met in their high school Polynesian music class. After performing in local talent shows, 17-year-old Roman De Peralta signed with a record label followed by the rest of the band.[1][2] De Peralta explains the band's name: Kolohe means "rascal",
