Sun beats through the skylights and soaks the studio in humid rays. Four dancers occupy the room at the Goh Ballet Academy, one-at-a-time performing pieces from The Nutcracker for Anna-Marie Holmes, who sits with her back to the mirrors along the wall. “Up! Up! Up!” she shouts over the music, reminding the performing dancer to complete her pirouettes before moving on. Holmes is effortless, and her demeanor is soft—usually. “Where are your elbows! It’s in the elbows!” she hollers. “Stop arching your back!” The dancer repositions herself as the music stops, and executes the portion of the dance that Holmes refers to—this time, making sure to straighten her back and find leverage in her arms. Anna-Marie Holmes has appeared as a ballerina and has taught in more than 30 countries on five continents. Born in Canada, she trained with Heino Heiden, Lydia Karpova and Wayne Shaw; in London with Audrey de Vos and Errol Addison and, in addition, received her Grade 10 Certificate from the Royal Conservatory of Music in piano. In New York she continued her ballet studies with Felia Dubrovska and trained in Leningrad with Natalia Dudinskaya, Alexander Pushkin and Alla Shelest of the Kirov Ballet. Holmes was the first North American invited to perform with the Kirov Ballet in Russia. She also has appeared with the London Festival Ballet, Royal Scottish Ballet, Berlin Staatsoper, Het Nationale Ballet of Holland, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal, Chicago International Ballet, Ruth Page Ballet, Royal Winnipeg Ballet and others. Anna-Marie Holmes (born April 17, 1942) is a Canadian-born ballet dancer, educator and choreographer. Holmes received an Emmy Award in 2000 for her staging of Le Corsaire for PBS. She was the founder and co-artistic director for the International Academy of Dance Costa do Sol in Portugal.
Early life and education
[edit]She was born to George Ellerbeck and Maxine Botterill, as Anna-Marie Ellerbeck, in Mission City, British Columbia. She studied piano at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto and ballet with Heino Heiden [de] and Lydia Karpova in Vancouver, with Wynne Shaw in Victoria, with Audrey de Vos and Errol Addison in London, with Felia Doubrovska in New York City, with Natalia Dudinskaya in Leningrad and with Karel Shook in Amsterdam.[1]
