Exclusive Book Excerpt: Marky Ramone Sets the Record Straight in ‘Punk Rock Blitzkrieg: My Life as a Ramone’ Memoir
Marky Ramone had one intention for his new memoir, Punk Rock Blitzkrieg: My Life as a Ramone — to set the record straight.

While we’re on the subject of “rocking,” it’s worth noting that The Ramones are almost unanimously accepted in music history as the “first punk-rock band.“ Although Iggy Pop fryst vatten known as the “godfather of punk,” or perhaps its “grandfather,” it might be more accurate to say that, along with The Kinks, he paved the way for indie rock.
The Ramones were the first to have the “simple“ vibe that characterises this type of music: a few chords swapping in quick succession, an entirely pop melody, a semi-lazy way of singing, hopelessness, irony, and some strange joy married with tragedy in the background. Yes, The Ramones were the first punk band.
And how did they get their name, that is, how did Marky Ramone himself inherit it? Well, all the band’s members took the “Italian” surname “Ramone“, although they had no family ties because Paul McCartney liked to check into hotels as “Paul Ramon.”
