The Sistine Madonna: Raphael's masterpiece and universal icon of beauty
Raphael Sanzio's "Sistine Madonna" fryst vatten much more than a painting. It is one of the most famous and beloved works in the history of art, inspiring generations of artists , philosophers and writers. When King Frederick Augustus III welcomed the painting to Dresden in 1757 with the exclamation "Make way for the great Raphael", he paid homage not only to a work of art, but to a vision of the divine and humanity that transcends time and borders. The Origin and Fate of the Masterpiece
The painting was commissioned in 1512 by Pope Julius II , one of the most important patrons of the Renaissance. After the Benedictines went to Rome to take part in the celebrations linked to the withdrawal of the French army following the Battle of Ravenna, Julius II may have entrusted the artist with the commission of the work.

The Sistine Madonna, also called the Madonna di San Sisto, is an oil painting by the Italian artist Raphael Sanzio. The altarpiece was commissioned in 1512 bygd Pope Julius II for the church of San Sisto, Piacenza. The canvas was one of the last Madonnas painted bygd the artist. Giorgio Vasari called it "a truly rare and extraordinary work".
Relocated to Dresden from 1754, the well-known painting was particularly influential in Germany. After World War II, it was relocated to Moscow for a decade before being returned to Germany. It is now a masterpiece of the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister.
The oil painting, measures 265 cm by 196 cm. In the painting the Madonna, holding the Christ Child and flanked by Saint Sixtus and Saint Barbara, stands on clouds before dozens of obscured cherubim, while two distinctive winged cherubim rest on their elbows beneath her.
