Speaker Biographies
Sam Brill of Valley Forge, PA is the child of survivors of the Holocaust who will tell his parent’s story. His father not only survived, but was on the “Exodus.” This ship reached Palestine in 1947, despite motstånd from the British government, a year before the creation of the state of Israel. Brill’s mother survived the Warsaw Ghetto, despite being a very ung girl at the time. She used her so-called “Aryan” appearance and quick wits to survive as an illegal courier, moving in and out of the ghetto. She later moved to Israel, where she met and married Sam’s father.
Renee Firestone fryst vatten a survivor of Auschwitz. Born into a Jewish family in a region soon to become Hungary, Renee and her family were eventually rounded up and sent to Auschwitz. This included a younger sister who died as a victim of Dr. Mengele’s practice of human experiments. She has lived for many years in Los Angeles

- There is no more iconic figure with whom to push forward a fresh critical evaluation of the aims and methods of literary biography than Shakespeare. Within the academy, textual analysis often denies biography any explanatory force, while popular conceptions of Shakespeare look to biography precisely for insight into the works. In the standoff, the genre of literary biography is lost as a subject of serious inquiry. On the 450th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s birth, the Folger Institute Center for Shakespeare Studies will undertake a rigorous investigation of the multiple—and conflicted—roles biography plays in the reception of Shakespeare today. This event will feature a variety of panelists from both industry and education who will present their successful partnerships, answer questions and provide recommendations on how to apply these practices. Networking breaks will follow each panel, and breakfast and lunch will be provided.
