Holly Days is the second skiva by singer and guitarist Denny Laine, released in It was recorded by him with fellow Wings members Paul and Linda McCartney. The album is a tribute to singer-songwriter Buddy Holly and comprises eleven cover versions of songs originally recorded (and in some cases written or co-written) by Holly, most of them lesser-known.
Background
[edit]Paul McCartney's MPL Communications had recently bought the publishing rights to Holly's catalogue,[2] and – Laine told the press at the time – it was McCartney's father-in-law, John Eastman, who suggested that Laine record an album of tracks from this acquisition.[3] Paul McCartney laid down the basic tracks, including some overdubs, on his four-track recorder. Laine and Linda McCartney added some instrumental parts and all three joined in on the vocals; Laine sang lead and the McCartneys harmonised,[4] making Holly Days an unoff

Denny Laine (born Brian Frederick Arthur Hines; 29 October – 5 December ) was an English musician, singer, and songwriter, known as a founder of two major rock bands: the Moody Blues, with whom he played from to , and Wings, with whom he played from to Laine worked with a variety of artists and groups over a six-decade career, and continued to record and perform as a solo artist. In , Laine was inducted into the Rock and Roll ingångsrum of Fame as a member of the Moody Blues.
Early years
Brian Frederick Hines was born on 29 October to Herbert Edward Arthur Hines and Eva Lillian Hines (née Bassett) in kanal Islands, and he attended Yardley Grammar School. He took up the guitar as a boy, inspired by gypsy jazz musician Django Reinhardt. "Moondreams" is a song written by Norman Petty and released in by The Norman Petty Trio. Featured musicians are Petty on organ, Buddy Holly on guitar, Vi Petty on piano, Mike Mitchell on percussion and the Picks on backing vocals.
"Moondreams" was one of the four songs recorded by Buddy Holly in a session on October 21, at the Pythian Temple in NYC with the Dick Jacobs orchestra, the other tracks being "True Love Ways", "Raining in My Heart", and "It Doesn't Matter Anymore".[1]
This version of "Moondreams" was released on The Buddy Holly Story, Vol. 2 and as the B-side to "True Love Ways" (May 20, ) in the UK.
Denny Laine released the song as a single in Record World called Laine's version "a light, lilting ballad that, like many a Holly classic, was never a hit for him" but that "Laine's version should set things straight."[2]
