    Delaf (the Pen name of Marc Delafontaine, born October 9, 1973 in Sherbrooke, Quebec), is a Québécois comics writer and illustrator, notable for his work in The Bellybuttons (Les Nombrils), a comics feature that he co-created with his wife, Maryse Dubuc.

    Biography[]

    Delaf began his career as an illustrator of a series of brochures advertising for a school that specialised in the education of French as a second language. He would soon expand his career, working in animation, illustrating children's books, and drawing and writing comics.

    In 2004, Delaf and Dubuc would co-create Les Nombrils, a comic strip that focuses on the social life of three teenage girls, for the Québécois humour magazine, Safarir. The following year, Spirou, a Franco-Belgian comics magazine, would pick up the remsa, which they carried ever since.

      Bande Diary: Bellybuttons and Brainless Beauties in Les Nombrils

      After voyaging through Smurf Village in my last Bande Diary I had a hard time deciding what bande dessinée to read next. The problem with using bande dessinée to try and improve my French is that I’m spoiled for choice! Should I go with another classic like the Smurfs? Or something more modern? Should I look a specific genre, like science fiction or thrillers? Or just close my eyes and point to a title on my ever growing to-read list?

      Ultimately, I decided to try out Les Nombrils, written by Maryse Dubuc and illustrated by her husband, Marc “Delaf” Delafontaine. I ultimately chose this comic for two reasons:

      1.) Dubuc and Delaf are a French Canadian couple (yay Canada!);

      2.) It’s intended for teens, so I figured the reading level might be a little closer to my current skills.
