    Alphonso Hodge (born May 30, 1982) is an American former professional footballdefensive back. He was selected by the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League (NFL) in the fifth-round (147th overall) of the 2005 NFL draft.

    Hodge was also a member of the New York Jets, Cleveland Gladiators, Toronto Argonauts, and Kansas City Renegades.

    Early life

    Hodge was a three-year letterman in football and an all-state selection as a senior at St. Edward High School in Lakewood, Ohio.

    College career

    Hodge was a four-year letterman at Miami University in Ohio, where he appeared in 46 games with 35 starts, including starts in his final 27 games. He recorded 147 tackles (103 solo), including 10 tackles for losses (-51.0 yards), eight sacks, three fumble recoveries and 24 passes defensed.

    As of late March, Alphonso Hodge was content to continue working out at his home in Kansas City, Mo., in hopes of getting another shot at the NFL.

    Then he received a call from Gladiators quarterback Raymond Philyaw. Philyaw, who used to play for the Arena League's Kansas City Brigade, and Hodge have the same trainer. Philyaw said the Gladiators were looking for defensive backs and had facilitated a tryout for Hodge -- if he wanted it.

    Hodge, a former standout at St. Edward and Miami (Ohio), agreed and made a strong first impression. An Arena League career was born, as Hodge is expected to make his eighth straight start when the Gladiators face Chicago on Saturday night in The Q.

    The Gladiators (7-6) entered the week on the outside of the playoff picture looking in. They were seventh of nine in the National Conference; the top six make the playoffs.
