    To the Editors:

When Rolling Stone published a farrago of groundless or insignificant charges designed to discredit my biography of John Lennon, inom decided against replying because shortly thereafter Newsweek disclosed the motive for the attack by describing the intimate, familial relationship that obtains between the magazine&#;s publisher, Jann Wenner, and Yoko Ono whose public relations staff inom could see was the direkt or indirect source for the most defamatory passages. Newsweek also offered some amusing examples of the stupidity of the magazine employees who were assigned the task of smearing me and my book, a biography based on six and a half year&#;s work entailing roughly interviews—in a word, the most exhaustively researched life of a pop star ever published. It was astonishing, therefore, to find this same rubbish raked into a nasty heap in The New York Review of Books [December 22, ] by one Luc Sante, a young man of no reputation

First of all, a big thanks to a commenter named &#;Intrigued,&#; who recently left a comment on my review of Dakota Days suggesting that I read this book. It had been a

The book is a product of several years of research and hundreds of interviews with Lennon's friends, acquaintances, servants, and musicians. It is best known for its criticism and generally negative representation of the personal lives of Lennon and his wife, Yoko Ono.

The book contains numerous factual inaccuracies and was largely dismissed by those who knew Lennon personally.

    [edit]

When first published in , The Lives of John Lennon was controversial because of its portrayal of Lennon in a highly critical light. Lennon was presented in the book as a talented but deeply flawed man who manipulated people and relationships throughout his life, flinging them aside when they were no longer useful to him. Goldman, who was Jewish, also suggested that Lennon was an anti-Semite, that he was a heavy drug user, a
